Details

From Bugzilla Helper:
User-Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.5; Windows 98; T312461)
BuildID: 2002031104

This happens with build 2002031104 on two different PCs. One runs Windows98SE
version 4.10.222 and the other runs WindowsXP Pro. Behavior began precisely on
2/28/02. Smtp account is with Yahoo!. Behavoir occurs with two diffrent IPS
(zzzipnet.net and 1st.net). Can receive pop3 mail just fine but smtp mail sends
fail. All I get is an eternal prompt to enter my smtp email address ad
infinitum.

Just as a test, I installed PegasusMail version 4.? (latest version). That
worked. I do not and will not use Outlook Express.

Mozilla worked fine up until 2/28. Do not recall which version of Mozilla I was
running at that time but it was either 0.9.8 or 0.9.9.

Reproducible: Sometimes
Steps to Reproduce:
1. email problem is eternal and has been since 2/28/02.
2. DNS problem with Mozilla browser varies but I *always* have *some* degree of
difficulty with 1st.net.

Actual Results: canot send mail

cannot resolve site via DNS

Possibly related...

With 1st.net ISP only, the Mozilla browser has a great deal of trouble
resolving web sites. I can access any site by typing in the IP address but not
if I try to access by URL. I don't have this problem with zzzipnet.net but
email problem exists with both ISPs. INTERNET EXPLORER WORKS PERFECTLY...
do you have any proxy preferences set?

No proxy setting but am running ZoneAlarm (free version) with High Local and
Internet and both local and internet servers blocked. Have always used this
setting, though, and have tried cranking filters down without success.

Need to point out, too, that this behavior began shortly after applying Windows
snmp patches. Am prepping a Linux workstation but it is not Internet ready yet.
Will test that install as soon as it becomes available.

Is this really dup of 121926? It seems they are different scenario.....
Jim, can you confirm that? Thanks.
Reopening this bug since I don't think that this is dup of 121926....

If ZoneAlarm is installed, even if filters are off, there might be residual
problems. You might want to search bugzilla for bug reports that involve
ZoneAlarm. I should (but have not) consolidated all the information on
ZoneAlarm, so unforuntately, you will need to do some exploration. I think I saw
some bugmail along these lines recently.
I believe my problem was caused by an SMTP setting in the Mozilla email client.
When checked, it forced Mozilla Mail to prompt my email server for a user name
and password. Removing the check mark restored my ability to send and receive
mail. As far as I've been able to determine, no bug was involved in my problem.
I resolved this, with help, about a week ago. If I'd realized that this branch
of the posting was still active, I'd have let everyone following the problem
here know as well. My appologies. Thanks, all.
Resolving per last comment.

Maybe your SMTP server doesn't accept SMTP-auth, and that created some funny
error condition...
