There were two types of test done to evaluate the "Almost done!" copy.

1) Quantitative A/B testing of the headline (1 control + 7 variations), which can be found here:

2) Qualitative user research was performed by the Firefox UX team found that the "Almost done" copy was misleading.

The salient paragraph partially validates and references past research: This finding is related to Expectation 2: Previous user research found issues with the “Almost Done” page that asks people to create a Firefox account. Some people thought it was mandatory, and others created an account but did not know what the account offered. (Onboarding Experience User Research Summary, Bill Selman;)
