I see lots of this spam in my console when I open about:newtab, probably because it triggers page thumb updates which use windowless browsers. I noted this in bug 1287004, but I think it was missed... I assumed it would go away soon but it's still there so here I am filing a bug about it. :-)

I can reproduce this on a clean profile as soon as I create some history that triggers thumbnails being created for about:newtab.

Happy to do any further debugging that might be helpful.
The patches in bug 1351777 might have fixed this. If my mental model is right the content process is creating ClientLayerManager instances for the hidden browser windows and then tries to paint them over the dummy PLayerTransaction that gets created. The parent side of that isn't really hooked up to anything, hence it would spew errors. The patches in bug 1351777 should use a BasicLayerManager instead of a ClientLayerManager and solve this. Maybe. :)
I was able to reproduce this, and it looks like bug 1351777 (particularly the change to PuppetWidget in the last patch) fixes it. I'm going to dupe this over. Feel free to reopen if you still see it.

The bug is not fixed yet in ff 54.0.

These messages appear whenever I open a new tab, AND they appear on my terminal (stderr, presumably), not just in a hidden log somewhere.  This is very annoying, as it messes up whatever I'm doing in that terminal, e.g. editing a file.

Probably this shows on my terminal because firefox happened to be first started via gnome-open from that terminal.

Bug 1351777 should be in FF 55, which is out in the release channel now. Please update to 55 and let us know if you still see the problem.
