Firefox 51 was having a problem with the hovering tooltips appearing as black text on a very dark gray background, making it unreadable. This affected many systems, including Mageia 6. Most of the bug reports distilled to bug 1319353. It has since been fixed in Firefox 52 for Mageia 6. However, the same problem remains when using Fedora 20 with Firefox 52.0.2 ESR.

Whoever runs an ancient unsupported version of Fedora with many security vulnerabilities has way bigger problems...?

Whoever runs Fedora is almost always running an ancient, unsupported OS (and if not, wait a few months and it will be) :) But there are times when embedded systems are physically secure and task-purposed and they are not easy to update, yet a newer browser is important as the front-end.

I have not had time to test CentOS/RHEL 6 yet (which are also ancient, and older code base than Fedora 20, but at least supported).
What is the GTK theme in use?
What is the GTK version?

I am not the exact relevant packages, but here are some I think might be relevant:

gtk2-2.24.27-1.fc20.x86_64
gtk3-3.10.9-2.fc20.x86_64
kde-style-oxygen-4.11.18-3.fc20.x86_64
kdelibs-common-4.14.7-4.fc20.x86_64
kde-runtime-15.04.0-1.fc20.x86_64
adwaita-gtk3-theme-3.10.0-2.fc20.x86_64
adwaita-gtk2-theme-3.10.0-2.fc20.x86_64
gnome-themes-standard-3.10.0-2.fc20.x86_64
oxygen-gtk2-1.4.6-1.fc20.x86_64
oxygen-gtk-1.2.0-5.fc20.noarch
oxygen-gtk3-1.3.5-1.fc20.x86_64

It is a locked-down, purpose-built appliance that is using KDE. I am at home and can't check it remotely other than various config files and it appears to be Oxygen:

# cat $HOME/.kde/share/config/plasmarc
[Theme]
name=oxygen

And on THAT different topic, a far, far worse problem- can't even RUN Firefox AT ALL on CentOS/RHEL 6, no matter how updated it is, because FF switched to GTK3 since something like version 46. I wouldn't care much [about continuing to use ESR45] except that sites start to complain and then banning visitors.

Still have not had time to try another test on Fedora 20 I wanted to, which is to switch to a different theme and see if the tooltip problem remains.

I tried changing the theme from Oxygen to Air and also Heisenbug, no change. Changed the window theme to Plastik, no change. Also tried changing the Firefox theme from default to Arc, no change.

Attaching screenshot, too.

Using currently Firefox 52.5.0 AND 57.0.0 in Linux Mint 18.2/32bit and the problem is the same. Considering that I reported this problem 18 months ago when I used Firefox 46 and Xubuntu 14.04 nothing changed. It's amazing.
