Are you certain the process is gone, per task manager process tab?

The icon can stay displayed after TB is closed, but hovering the task bar usually makes it disappear. BTW, I see no icon in your screenshot.

Adrian, do you see this when using version 60?

Error reoccurs in recent Thunderbird 78.5.1 (32-bit). New mail notification cause a grey rectangle at the lower right corner of the screen that persists even after closing Thunderbird. When reopening Thunderbird, it also is stuck with receiving new email.
Addendum: The grey rectangle (empty notification window) disappears when manually killing the thunderbird process in Windows task manager.
