Steps to reproduce:

Try to create a new event in calendar, any way, such as clicking directly on the calendar.

Actual results:

New event pop-up window appears with no content, just grey box with window menu.

Expected results:

The New Event pop-up should include fields for event details such as time and title.

I found workaround solution for this issue.

In T'bird navigate to Tools > Add-ons > Lightning > Options > General > Events & Tasks and check the box:
"Edit events in tabs instead of windows".

That solved the issue & I can now view and edit event details.
Is this still reproducable for you if you flip the preferences off? If so, can you please check the error console and post the messages when opening and event window? Also, please provide information about your setup (OS, 32/64 bit, source of where you got TB/Lightning from, location of your TB profile (local, network), filesystem of that folder, calendar types you are using, offline support en/disabled for these, to how many calendars do you have subscribed).

Yes, still reproducible with preferences off. I don't get any error console or error msg when this occurs.

Setup: Tbird 52.1.0 (32-bit), Lightning 5.4.1, WIN 7 SP1 running on company laptop. I subscribe to one primary calendar.

Thanks. Does the issue occur close to startup time of TB or also after running it for a while? Is the calendar available and writable when reproducing (there should be a little triangle next to the calendar name when it is not)?

Can you also provide information about the other requested bits, please - especially about location of the TB profile and the calendar type? Are you on a local or roaming Windows profile? Is this an individual installation or deployed by your IT department with preset preferences? If the latter, are you able to share those preferences?
Do you get any error messages in Tools > Error Console?

A similar sounding problem was reported in <https://groups.google.com/d/msg/mozilla.support.calendar/apARiDGHYhw/4g03US7PAQAJ>. In this case the error was caused by an extension called Oracle Beehive Extensions for Thunderbird. Do you use such an extension?
Flags: needinfo?(andrew.bearman)
I do get 2 JS errors, one upon opening the event edit window and the second when closing the window.

TypeError: window.calendarItem is undefined
calendar-dialog-utils.js:402:1

and when closing:

TypeError: document.getElementById(...) is null
eventDialogOverlay.js:83:5

Yes, I am using Oracle Beehive Extensions for Tbird v1.0.0.7 (July 15, 2016)

Thanks, for reporting back. This needs to be fixed in the Beehive extension - please report the issue to its author. I resolve this bug as invalid for that reason.

In Thunderbird 52.1.1, Lightning 5.4.1.1, the workaround from Comment 1 was successful. The discovery step was slightly different.

To use the workaround where you click the "Edit events in tabs instead of windows" checkbox, follow this path:

Tools > Add-ons > Lightning > Options > Calendar
Summary: In v52.0, when I try to create an event in calendar, the pop-up window is greyed out, with no content other than the pop-up window. → New event dialog window is greyed out, with no content other than menu and toolbar [when using Oracle Beehive extension]
