From Bugzilla Helper: User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:0.9.9) Gecko/20020314 BuildID: 20020314 The browser sometimes freezes when loading web pages. It must then be killed manually, with a SIGKILL signal. It seems to happen on more complex web pages (with photos, lots of graphics, or some sort of dynamic content, such as Flash). In all cases, it happens at some point during rendering the page. This is the extent to which I have been able to establish any kind of pattern. This does not happen consistently. Some days, it does not happen much, other days (like today, 5 April 2002) it happens so often that the browser is almost unusable. For example, I was unable to view today's Dilbert on unitedmedia.com, whereas I can do this most days. Here is a sample of URLs on which I have reproduced this behavior at least once: http://caranddriver.com http://washingtonpost.com http://zdnet.com http://ucomics.com http://unitedmedia.com http://timesofindia.com (several other commercial websites) Some URLs on which I have consistently NOT observed this behavior are: http://slashdot.org http://members.telocity.com/sledge http://mozilla.org http://mozillazine.org http://java.sun.com http://google.com (most websites whose authors have taken the trouble to make sure the content is accessible by all browsers) IIRC, I have observed this behavior since 0.9.7. Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: 1. Either enter URL or click on link. Actual Results: Browser freezes Expected Results: Mozilla should have loaded and rendered the page. I use the unstable version of Debian Linux, with the 2.4.16 kernel. I have also observed this behavior with Galeon, which I believe uses the Gecko rendering engine. They do not always freeze at the point (i.e., sometimes Mozilla manages to render more of the page) or even on the same URL.
Do you have flash installed and using /edv/dsp when this occures? (Playing music with xmms or similar) The sites you mention seem to load flash adds at times. Suspected duplicate of bug 58339

Yes, I do have Flash installed, and I run xmms almost constantly. However, the browser has never frozen on me upon startup--only when loading the "offending" web pages. I will play around with xmms and report my findings.

All the listed troublesome URLs work for me, using 2002-04-02-03 / Windows 2000.

I tried closing XMMS, and was unable to reproduce the problem. Also tried the following: 1. Enter a URL with Flash content while XMMS is running. 2. Wait for browser to hang. 3. Close XMMS. The browser then proceeds to load the page and play the Flash content with no problems. Also tried one of the workarounds mentioned in bug 58339 (downgrading to Flash version 4), and the browser has not hung on Flash content with XMMS running.
