Description

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:52.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/52.0
Build ID: 20170323105023

Steps to reproduce:

45.0.0 for Linux

If you mouse position the cursor on a blank line, the cursor will not show, until you move it to somewhere with text. This is very confusing to deal with.

TB 45 is already coming to the end of its life-cycle. Can you try a newer version.

I can try, but I would have to break the RPM database and run a "binary". This can have weird consequences.

This is another one of those Red Hat, we won't update anything and just pick a revision, bugs, security flaws, and all, freeze it in place, and call it stable.

And as far as I can tell, this is not one of those bug riddled ESR releases either!

Since this is Red Hat being hard headed, I don't think there is anything you guys can do about it, so go ahead and close. Sorry for not checking this before posting.

# cat /etc/redhat-release
Scientific Linux release 7.3 (Nitrogen)

# rpm -qa thunderbird
thunderbird-45.8.0-1.el7_3.x86_64

# yum upgrade thunderbird
No packages marked for update

$ yum list thunderbird
thunderbird.x86_64 45.8.0-1.el7_3 @sl-rolling-security

Well, the problem with supporting Linux is that there are so many distros and weird mixes.

One would think that the current version of TB, which is still TB 45.8 since we haven't enabled update to TB 52 yet, should work OK on Red Hat, certainly not losing the cursor display on empty lines in the compose window. I assume that's what you mean since it's not stated clearly.

What desktop or screen manager does Red Hat use?

Aceman, have you ever seen this?

Red Hat uses virtually all of them. Primarily they like the overly weird "Gnome" in particular. But there are KDE and Xfce spins as well.

I am using Xfce 4.12 as my desktop.

Yes, I am losing the cursor display on empty lines in the compose window.

Also, if I reply under a quote and do not put an empty line and down arrow to it, my typing stays blue and carriage returns are ignored. Very annoying.

I can't reproduce this right now on 45 nor 55. I see the cursor fine in compose window (when the window has focus).
However I think I have seen such things before and also in Firefox so I just consider textarea rendering on Linux a mess and already made a habit to ignore the visual glitches. Maybe it has improved with some newer GTK libraries that are not in Redhat yet.

Summary: missing cursor on empty lines → missing cursor on empty lines (Xfce)
I don't see any like matches in https://mzl.la/2sF8tfc for bugs with activity in the last two years.
Anyway, you should be able to run the Mozilla supplied Thunderbird 52 just fine.

Do you also still see this in 52?
