Steps to reproduce:

After updating to Thunderbird 52.1.1 (64-bit) trough the systems package manager on Linux Mint 17.3 Cinnamon 64-bit
1. Click forward or reply to message
2. Enter reply text in message
3. Click "Send"


Actual results:

Error message "Error when sending message" or sometimes the Send button is greyed out and cannot be clicked. Restart solves it for a while.


Expected results:

Mail should be send, Send button should not be greyed out

BTW three colleagues in the office report the "Error when sending message" problem (on Ubuntu)

"Error when sending message" and "Send button greyed out" are two different problems.

What's the detailed message in the first case? Does this happen with add-ons disabled? See Help menu.

Same issue here with multiple users since 52.1.1.
* sending sometimes hangs at 'Connecting to...'
* once aborted, the Write window is still there with the message but Send is disabled
* save as draft, edit again works
* re-sending often works, doesn't seem related to message content or recipients
* observed with both SSL/TLS and STARTTLS connection to SMTP server

Addition to my previous comment. We're using the EnigMail PGP add-on, which has a very similar bug report: https://sourceforge.net/p/enigmail/bugs/687/
Could be in the interop of Thunderbird and EnigMail but I don't know if that applies to the reporter of this issue as well.

I also encountered this issue today. Got stuck on "Creating mail message...". Coincidentally I use Enigmail, too.

It's at "Creating mail message...". (I should not file bugs from the top of my head...)
