Steps to reproduce:

I want to add supplement to an email I already sent. It should include my previous answer as quote.

Actual results:

I can't do this in current Thunderbird interface easily. If I go to the sent folder there will be no "smart reply" option, and if I just use reply button it will create an email with me in "to" field.

Expected results:

If you press reply button to a message from sent folder it should put your pen pal email to the "to" field. Or at least it should be an option to use smart reply button there.
What you're describing is "reply to self" and that generally works. The reply doesn't go to you but to the original recipient instead. If there are multiple accounts/identities you might have to set the preference mailnews.reply_to_self_check_all_ident in the config editor: Tools > Options, Advanced, General.
Summary: Can't add another reply to already answered thread → Can't add another reply to already answered thread (reply to self)
Component: Mail Window Front End → Message Compose Window
Yes. Setting mailnews.reply_to_self_check_all_ident solved the problem. It should be set to true by default.
Or it should check the account used to send the mail I reply to at least. The described situation is very common and Thunderbird works very counterintuitive here.

Yes, I've been thinking that. Would you like to file a new bug for that?
