The pref "mailnews.show_send_progress" should be set to false
by default. Opening an extra sending window is heavy on slow
computers and is just an annoyance.

Since the progressmeter is also shown in other windows, then
its only purpose is the Cancel button.

But if Bug 136114 is resolved, the extra sending window can
be removed.

I disagree. Users, especially new ones, get concerned if there doesn't appear to
be any indication that the program is doing something (the progress meter in the
Status Bar can be missed).
Summary: [RFE] Turn off extra sending window by default → [RFE] Turn off sending progress window by default
Users are aware of the progressmeter in the status bar
because it appears with almost everything they do.

They intuitively look at the status bar to look for any
signs of activity in the browser apps, whether they are
reloading a page or checking mail. Sending mail should
be no different.

If the only purpose of the sending progress window is the
"status bar can be missed", then checking mail should also
have an extra progress window.

Mozilla takes so much memory opening new windows. Once Moz
can open new windows without losing ram, then it would be
ok to show extra progress windows.

Alex, if you try the setting, you will see it looks so
clean and elegant, and the status bar progressmeter cannot
be missed.
I also disagree.
Users like to see animations and progress windows to make them think that they
are in control of the program, not the other way around.

There are other bugs to provide progress windows showing the download of
messages, so do you really think that this can be taken away without a lot of
users complaining?
I am confirming this bug as it is a valid request.

Personally I agree that one progress bar (the one in the compose window) is
enough but I have added the UI keyword in order to put it on the relevant
peoples radar

Bug 218557 is the same bug for Thunderbird.
This is a UI issue, not core code issue IMO
