Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:53.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/53.0
Build ID: 20170529182308

Steps to reproduce:

Open a page with a pdf download link, such as https://duckduckgo.com/?q=example+pdf
Click a link to download the pdf file. Any link on the page above should suffice.
Type into the url bar a new url, such as https://fsf.org

Actual results:

The pdf file is downloaded for a second time. The first time was when the link was clicked, then again instead of the new url being loaded.

Expected results:

Instead of downloading the pdf, the new url should have been loaded.

i cannot repro on both 53.0 & nightly.

does the file is downloaded second time during downloading of file or when download is finished ?
please ignore my question in comment 1, i misinterpreted the meaning of bug title.
Thank you for your report. I couldn't reproduce this bug on Nightly 55 or Fennec 53. Could you install the latest Nightly build and verify if you still encounter the same issue?: http://archive.mozilla.org/pub/mobile/nightly/2017/06/
If so, please give us more details about the device you are using.

Hi rayhogenson,

From your STR, you clicked on a link to download the pdf file. Would you help to provide which exact the URL is able to reproduce please? Thank you.

So it looks like the reason it might be difficult to reproduce is that it only appears after browsing for some significant amount of time before performing the instructions above. I've created a web page for easy reproduction of this bug:

1. Navigate to "rayhogenson.github.io/firefoxbug"
2. Click the link "Second Page"
3. Click the link "First Page"
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 many, many times to simulate natural browsing. For specificity, I repeated them until I had clicked on 100 links total, so steps 2 and 3 50 times each.
5. Click the link "Link to pdf"
6. The file downloads
7. In the URL bar, enter a URL such as "fsf.org"

Instead of navigating to fsf.org, the pdf file is downloaded again.

These instructions do not work with 100% confidence I am sorry to say, if it does not work on the first try I urge you to keep clicking those links, perhaps throw in some other natural browsing before coming back to try step 5 again. After some time of this the bug should present itself. Sorry if this isn't clear enough to reproduce.

I have a desktop browser (fully updated), but similar issue: I click to open PDF on a site, then FF goes into eternal, endless cycle of opening a tab that looks like "c:\\\something-somethings-path\filename.pdf" which then gets immediately closed, and then opened again, and forever. I have to kill FF process twice to get the screen when I can uncheck this "evil" tab.

Instead of this all FF should simply open PDF. Is it the same bug as this one or it is actually different?

This does not sound like the same bug as the behaviour is different. In my case the bug manifests itself when trying to open a new url in the tab from which the PDF was just downloaded.
Ioana: did your team meet this in your daily testing activities? Or would you help verify that on your side? I'm not really sure if this should be an easy-to-meet issue. Thanks.

We will have a look on it.

I am not able to reproduce this at all. I have a very large profile, with more than 50 tabs obs so a lot of browsing done but the file it is open just once.
Rayhogenson - do you still see this on your side? Which device and OS are you using?
Flags: needinfo?(ioana.chiorean)
Yes I still experience this issue. I am using Firefox 54.0.1 (although as noted above the issue still occurs in nightly) on a Samsung Galaxy S5 model number SM-G600V, and Android version 6.0.1.
Since it's hard to reproduce, I'll mark it as P3 and tracking for anyone who has this and want to fix it.

Sorry for the time passed, rhogenson are you still seeing this?
