See my futile attempt to ask the void for help in bug 1371441 comment 0.  I have asked the said void for help many times.  It's just not going to help us.  It's better to not let needinfo's go to it.  :-)
would it be sufficient to require this in the UI of the show bug page only, at least for now? Or is the needinfo on attachments also a problem?

I personally care about the former much more than the latter due to the fact that I use it a lot more (obviously not claiming that I have data around it but I'd be happy if this were fixed for the show bug page!)

I think it will be sufficient to add the "required" html attribute to the text input box, 
when the "Need more information from" checkbox is checked and the selectbox is "other".
