After turning off the memory cache and re-launching mozilla, downloading news messages fails. Headers get downloaded fine, but when trying to load a full message, nothing happens. When opening it in a new window, the message pane is empty. Steps to reproduce: 1. Make sure you are subscribed to at least one newsgroup 2. Go to Edit | Preferences | Advanced | Cache 3. Set "Memory Cache" to zero (and clear it) 4. Go to ... | Debug | Networking 5. Uncheck "Enable Mem Cache" 6. Submit that and re-launch Mozilla 7. Launch MailNews and go to a newsgroup with new messages 8. Try to download a new message Expected results: Message should download fine. When double-clicking, message should appear in new window. Actual results: Message doesn't get downloaded at all.
Confirming with both OS X 10.1.4 and Windows 2000 - latest trunk and Mozilla 1.0 branch builds. This isn't a problem for the commercial releases, because we remove the debug pref panel, but we should still fix this.

Mozilla suite v1.7.5 for os/2. Also Firefox v1.0.0 for os/2 and windows 2000. I just discovered this defect myself, three years after it was first reported. <http://news.independent.co.uk/> does not display anything if browser.cache.memory.enable is set to false. Also phpMyAdmin 2.6.1 does not display if memory cache is disabled.
Jim, you are mistaken. This bug is about download news (as in Usenet news) messages with the MailNews component, and has nothing to do with webpage based news services. (Although I have to admit I didn't find a bug that fits your problem, you should be aware that disabling memory cache is unsupported.)
sorry for the spam. making bugzilla reflect reality as I'm not working on these bugs. filter on FOOBARCHEESE to remove these in bulk.
