OK, bug 137399 has resolve most of my issues, except a few:
1) Clicking on the checkbox selects and toggles the row on which the mouse is
released, behaviour in e.g. thread pane is not to change the selection.
2) Twisties. I didn't have them before. You might like them, of course :-)
3) Splitters. They didn't work with the old tree, but they could be added now,
plus my hack to get the old tree to work should be removed.
4) Still possible to get multiple checkboxes selected on a single-selection
list. Investigating...

This got fixed as part of the editorshell removal.
