Firefox seems to do more disk I/O than Safari which is really bad on FileVault-encrypted disks. FileVault is the default setting for new Mac installs. Let's find out where Safari reads/writes from, follow suit or do something quicker. Symptoms feel like bfcache (or some other cache) thrashing.

This is a pretty old report, a lot has changed since then. I haven't noticed anything problematic about disk i/o. I think it would be best to open a new report citing a more specific problem if there is still an issue.
