Some people do not like the autosizing behavior, and it is pretty trivial to pref it. By default, it will be on because it is expected that a majority will find it useful.

Is this live yet? I can't see an option "autosize comment". I'm the guy who complained in bug 1381200.

Fantastic, works like a charm. I've gotten used to the modal interface, but it was quite annoying with the size restriction in the comment box. Authors of any kind feel that limiting the space they can fill also limits their thoughts ;-)

The new option stopped working, regardless of the setting, the comment box can only be resized vertically, not diagonally any more, see bug 1386529.
