User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:53.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/53.0 Build ID: 20170504105526 Steps to reproduce: I did a clean install of firefox 54.0.1 and 55 beta 8, on windows 7 Actual results: FireFox ask me if I want to make fireFox default browser after both installations, I clicked yes and I got "User account control"! Expected results: The browser should become default browser without "user account control". I works fine in version 53, where no "user account control" is necessary to make fireFox a default browser for a non administrative user.

Please describe what is "User account control" if you "got" that.

"user account control" is something like picture on the link: http://contentinjection.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Learn-More-with-Windows-User-Account-Control.png It is request to "raise privileges", but if a user is not an administrator, it can not raise privileges!

The request for elevation when setting as default comes from helper.exe which is part of the installer so moving component. Matt, can you take a look at this?

I've reproduced this and tracked it down to a regression introduced by bug 1340568. That means everything back to 54 is affected. The fix is simple enough so I'll go ahead and patch it, but I don't think the severity of the issue is enough to merit any uplifts.

I've tested on 2 machines with Windows 7 x64, standard user (without admin privileges) and admin user and I wasn't able to reproduced the initial issue. I've tried using Firefox 53, Firefox 54.0.1 and Firefox 55 Beta 3. Could you please verify that the bug is fixed on Firefox 57 Beta 14 (https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/candidates/57.0b14-candidates/build1/win64/)? Thanks!

I have updated to "Firefox 57 Beta 14" and when I click to make a firefox a default browser in a start up dialog or in options button, eater way, nothing happens. There is no UAC prompt, but also firefox is not a default browser. If I would uninstall and install I guess it would work, but that is not a good option.

This bug is about UAC prompts. If no UAC prompt appeared, then that is not this bug. Please file a new bug instead of reopening an unrelated one.

hombre83, can you then confirm that this bug is fixed, isn't reproduce anymore so we can close it? And will you log a new bug for the issue mentioned in comment 14?
