Details

(Whiteboard: qe-needed)

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:54.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/54.0
Build ID: 20170628075643

Steps to reproduce:

This link causes FF (54.0.1) to hang and consume all memory fairly quickly. I came across it by chance. I do not know much about the site, nor what may be causing the problem.

Actual results:

my machine has 32GB and all was consumed within 5 minutes or so

Expected results:

Chrome does not seem to have the problem
Hi Dave,

I tested this issue with FF Release 54.0.1 on Win 10 x86 and could not reproduce it.

Could you please capture a gecko profile using the steps from here: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Performance/Reporting_a_Performance_Problem

Please let us know the results.

Thank you!

OK, I am sorry but I want to keep this machine 'clean' so I won't be installing nightly or add-ons. But if there is other info that I can extract from my setup, please specify.
I confirm that the problem still occurs.

Could you please try to Run Firefox in Safe mode and see if you encounter the same behavior?

You can find more details about the above requests along with some new troubleshooting methods, here:

Sure: in safe mode the problem still occurs, but does not seem to consume memory quite so quickly. Nevertheless FF consumed 8GB in 30 mins and no sign of stopping. Did I say before that FF is *unresponsive* all the while (after clicking that link) ?

Are you able to update to a newer version of Firefox? Like current release (55)? Or do you need to stay on 54?

Sorry for my slow reply - no, I am now on ESR 52 because I don't want my addons to break. When that happens (silly decision by firefox) I will review which browser to use. A shame after 15 years.

Meanwhile ... well this is exciting ... I tried my 'failing' link on ESR 52 and it FAILS here too, even with Firefox restarted in SAFE mode. Memory gets gobbled up and Firefox goes unresponsive. I had to kill it.

So maybe I can help further if you have diagnostic tools that work with ESR 52.

Hi Dave,

When this happens, could you please enter the address "about:memory?verbose" in the address bar and attach (using the "Attach File" link above) the output here.

Thanks
