Using the deprecation steps at https://github.com/whatwg/html/pull/1399#issue-158960327, change the WPT tests to check for proper deprecation of the applet tag.
Since I felt guilty for wrongly accusing you I created https://github.com/w3c/web-platform-tests/pull/6684. Happy for you to review that and either land it here (using same URL with .patch attached) and it'll get synchronized later or we'll land it here.
Oh, awesome, thanks so much for doing that! I kept getting distracted the past couple of days so hadn't made any progress on it. I'll talk to :jgraham about merging that after it lands, and will just use this bug to remove the bug 1279218 test when that's done, since that overlaps with the document applet test.
I landed https://github.com/w3c/web-platform-tests/pull/6684 upstream so I guess it's now up to you to remove that test (or maybe wait for a sync, dunno).
