If one looks at the tabs, there clearly are two active tabs at the same time.

Tentatively moving this to Core :: Graphics... there's not much that the front-end can do to create the effect in the screenshot - not without jumping through a lot of hoops. I suspect this bug is lower down in the Graphics pipeline.

I don't think so. If you look at the screenshot you can see there are two active tabs. I mean the tab elements are active, and the relevant content areas then too.

The async tab switcher is responsible for setting the "visually selected" state of each tab[1], and has likely gotten confused. But I suspect this is rooted in whatever is causing the glitch in the content area. I suspect if we can explain one, we can explain the other. I assume your brother has e10s enabled based on "browser.tabs.remote.autostart.2" being set to true. That's kinda interesting, because the old tiles-based about:newtab page is run on the parent process. Assuming the other content we're seeing is being run in the content process, what we're seeing then is a blending of layers from both the content and the parent process, which is pretty wacky. I also note that your brother has a lightweight theme enabled. If he disables it, is he still able to reproduce the glitch? Marking this wontfix for 57, since this was reported against 55 and isn't a 57 regression. Would also be helpful to know, assuming this is reproducible, if this is also happens on 57. There have been so many changes to tabs and Activity Stream replaces newtab, so debugging pre-57 probably isn't useful at this point.
