gila is woefully underpowered. All the services need to be migrated from gila to tegu. Not sure who ultimately will work on this task, but I wanted to get it entered into the database.

Let's just use gila until the owner of the machine really wants it back.

As I wrote in my original description, this is not about returning gila to its rightful owners, but rather that gila does not have enough memory or disk to serve efficiently all the tasks which it presently performs. The machine was loaned before the E450 servers were shipped; it was never intended to be used as a production system for so long.

gila is only handling mail and web server, and I haven't seen it being overloaded. It needs more disks though.

I talked to Endico about this and she agrees this is not of paramount importance right now. So, sorry to have reopened.

Let's get this done... we need to decommission gila finally. Now tegu don't have cvs-mirror anymore so we have one machine almost unused.

Services to be migrated: - www, with newsbot & htdig - mozilla.org email, smartlist - ssh logins to be rewritten using ssh-agent & non-empty RSA key passwords - docs cvs-server

Comment about ssh: once gila will be going away every host will get their own authorized_keys file. We are currently planning to build "ssh key management" tool to be used to distribute keys from central location to different hosts and that's where mozilla.org servers can also go.

also, there's bonsai running on current gila for docs root

people currently access the cvs repository for the doc tree as "gila.mozilla.org". Lets not break this. Most people would find it very painful to have to re-pull their doc tree with a different name. I guess that means moving this service last. You were planning to move the gila name to tegu, right?

Yes, the plan was to put gila as a CNAME to tegu.

I think I want to wait until new E220R servers before getting to this. Ie. let's put www/email/mail lists etc to one of those and use tegu for something else, for example dedicated bugzilla server (because tegu is E450 and more powerful). email/www/mail lists won't need E450, E220 is fine but bugzilla might need more power.

Just as a thought... How about migrating mailing lists and all mozilla.org emails to Netscape's mail servers? We have done this succesfully to couple of new acquires (just last night I integrated iamaze.com into our mail systems). All mozilla.org emails could be handled with virtusertables and mailing lists could be integrated into Aka. This would mean that all mailing list issues would be supported like any other lists and mail relays would be existing Netscape infrastructure. Just a thought that IMHO would make a lot of sense.

I see two problems with that solution: It puts a whole bunch of mozilla.org infrastructure on machines that we can't give non-Netscape contributors (eg blizzard, shaver) administrative access to. It is a step away from centralizing mozilla.org's user info in a publicly accessible LDAP server, rather than a step towards that.

Moving to nobody until we have better picture of where we'll be going with mozilla.org support by IC.

Per discussion with Dawn 3/22/01 marking this as WONTFIX. Gila will make a good web and mail server. Instead what we need to do is to migrate cvs server off from it to cvs.mozilla.org, and bonsai/mysql to lounge. Let's use tegu as a powerful server to something where you need that power, and mail/www isn't such an application and we could keep it on gila (assuming we will be able to fix the disk space problems).
