Details

There appears to be no way to remove the display of listicles from the new-tab page.  I try valiantly to avoid this schlock on the web, yet here it is making me subliminally angry ("Why did opening this bug remind me how I've been doing seventeen things wrong in the shower my whole life?") every time I open a new tab while working.

Please offer a permanent "close" button to make them go away.

As an aside, offering me items from my list instead of "trending" might help me be less desperate to make them go away.
I think this belongs in Activity Stream. Ed, can you take a look?

Are you able to turns off the pocket section via new tab prefs? Either click the gear in the top right or from the (?) at the top right of the section?

I did find that I can use the gear icon in the upper right corner to make these go away.  That UX wasn't obvious, but it does exist :)

Bug 1404345 made it easier to discover by also allowing users to find the prefs from each section.
