User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.3; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/60.0.3112.90 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce:

1) Install Thundebird stable (52.2.1), or Beta (56.0b2 atm).
2) Try to add an existing account, Google mail that is.
3) It will simply try to go through the normal (non OAuth) process and will fail.

OS: Windows 8.1 Pro
English OS and Thunderbird language, fully updated.

Kaspersky Free Anti-Virus.
Might cause the "false SSL" dialog to pop up (like most AV that scans email), but I doubt it has much to do with a dialog not appearing at all.

Ps.: I tried deleting my %APPDATA%\Thunderbird folder, and I deleted it between the stable and beta version too.

Actual results:

It fails to opens the OAuth window where you have to log in again.

Expected results:

It should open the OAuth window.
Strange, since in TB 52.2.1 and TB 56 beta this problem shouldn't occur. However, we still get some reports, for example bug 1379475 (and its duplicates). I've recently (re-)setup a Gmail account with OAuth2 and that worked fine.

Wayne, any insights here?

I also used a Windows 10 Pro and it worked just fine with 52. But now on my home PC (Windows 8.1 Pro), the OAuth just does not come up. I tried to add the account nevertheless - using IMAP/SMTP, but it didn't work. (Guess it wants OAuth?)

Thought I might don't have an addon installed or anything, but the Windows 10 PC was also brand new.
Maybe it's a Windows 8 specific issue? I don't know...

But let me know if you guys have any idea on how to track this down, I am wiling to try everything.
Like on my other PCs, every time it just sees "gmail.com", the dialog pops up, where I have to re-login. But here it just keeps on searching and searching like it's a normal email account.

Changing the email to @googlemail.com does not fix the problem either. Weird.
You'd have to check the error console:
Tools > Developer Tools > Error Console.
Click on the little bin icon to clear it before trying the Gmail thing. Then copy/paste any new content to a text file and attach it here under "Attach File". Or if it's less that 10 lines, you can paste it into a comment.

Strange that one PC works for you and another one doesn't. I don't quite understand the "here it just keeps on searching and searching like it's a normal email account". So where usually the OAuth2 panel would pop up, it just hangs? What would it be "searching" for?

No. I only know of http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?p=14760159#p14760159 which is curious but perhaps not a valid issue.

These sumo masters will be better informed than me.

Are cookies enabled in Thunderbird? Or are they being blocked by security software? I really do not know the mechanics, but it does appear cookies enabled is required.

I don't know how to reproduce this. I always add a gmail account, and I add a Google Calendar to Lightning when running the smoketest. Both of these use OAuth2 and I would have considered this a fail had it occurred in testing.

As Matt says, it seems that cookies and security software are possible causes.

Does it work if you create a new profile to test the account creation in Thunderbird?
  see https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/using-multiple-profiles
Do not delete the old profile
