Running "system_profiler SPDisplaysDataType | grep Resolution" shows that it's running at 1280 x 1024 @ 60 Hz. Moreover, I see some errors like the ones below when running the command:
"<Warning>: CGSCopyDisplayInfoDictionary: error requesting display info dictionary (0x3e8)"
Did a reimage, but it had no effect. This seems to be responsible for a bunch of intermittent failures [1], so I stopped the machine for now since it's running in TC and disabling it won't have any effect.

this looks likes it's fixed as plugging in a monitor shows default resolution at 1600x1200.
