I restarted in safe mode and the forward buttton was there and didn't see the back button grayed out. The only problem I had before the current version was a periodic not responding message that would go away shortly after it came up.

If it works in safe mode it's probably a problem with one of your add-ons. You can try disabling half of them and restarting, checking if it's reproducing, and then restarting and disabling half of the remaining add-ons, and so forth to find out which add-on is causing the problem. Once we know which add-on is causing this, we can check if there's anything Firefox can do to solve the problem.
FWIW, we're working on solving the problem of add-ons breaking core Firefox functionality and the situation should be better in Firefox 57.

So, here's what I've tried. I disabled all add-ons that said not compatible with multiprocess. Same problems. I disabled all add-ons that are compatible with multiprocess. Same problems. I reloaded 55.0.2. Same problems. I open a new tab and the back button is grayed out, no forward button. I then load a site on that tab, nothing changes. I then reload the page, the back and forward buttons are normal. I open another new tab, everything goes back to back button grayed out, no forward button. I go back to a previous tab, the buttons that were fine are now screwed up again. I reload the page, the buttons come back fine. I go back to another previous tab, reload it and the back button is grayed out but the forward button is fine. Reload it again and everything is fine again. I wasn't having any problems like this until this latest upgrade.

Well, knock on wood, I think I've got the problem taken care of. Since I was using the 32 bit version and Windows 7 is 64 bit, I decided to install the 64 and dump the 32. So far, everything appears to be working correctly. Doesn't fix the other problems from the 32 bit but I won't have to call Firefox any more names. :)

Going to mark this as resolved -> wfm for now.
One final question: in the add-on manager, do you have adobe acrobat reader installed, maybe under 'plugins' rather than 'extensions' ?

or at least, was that the case under the 32-bit version?

I don't have adobe acrobat reader installed in firefox or as a stand alone program. Thanks for your assistance with all of this.
