Steps to reproduce:

I installed Firefox nightly 57 from AUR(https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/firefox-nightly/) on ArchLinux, which grabs the latest nightly build from Mozilla official site.


Actual results:

It uses too much CPU, say, always 100%, and the UI is not so responsive. I can confirm this issue only happens in the latest two weeks. Even if I refreshes it, the issue remains.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I remeber days before I had tried safe mode and the issue remained. But now I grab the latest nightly build and the CPU usage seems not so high as before, it just hits 100% occasionally. Hope it'll be better next builds:)

I have tested this issue using Ubuntu 14.0.4 x64, on latest Nightly 57.0a1 (Build ID:20170822142709) but I haven't managed to reproduce it. The CPU performance was normal and the UI was responsive.

Can you please retest this issue on latest Nightly build using a new profile to eliminate custom settings as a possible cause (https://goo.gl/AR5o9d)?

Hi, My computer is ArchLinux. I reinstall the the nightly build, delete ~/.mozilla and ~/.cache/mozilla, and restart it, I find the CPU issue is gone. However, after I sign into my account, the CPU hits 100% more often than before. If you need more information, please let me know:) Thanks.

1. Can you retest this issue and send a Memory Report, while using latest Nightly build? Go in "about:memory" page, click on "Measure and save..." button. Afterwards, please attach here the report.

2. Can you try collecting a performance profile to see if anything stands out there? The link below has directions for how to collect and submit a profile.

Yes, those extensions are all re-installed by Firefox sync. But I don't think the extensions contribute to the high CPU, because when I restart it in safe mode, the CPU is still high.

Can you please also try to do the following, because I think it might help to figure out this issue: 

1. Download the latest Nightly build from here: https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/nightly/latest-mozilla-central/. Afterwards, please log in your Firefox account and see if the issue is still reproducible. If yes, please again try to provide a performance profile.

2. Also, if you don't mind, can you please disable manually your add-ons, restart the browser and see if the issue is still reproducible.

Unfortunately, the profile in comment 12 was gathered on a non-Nightly build of Firefox, so it's not symbolicated, which means it's of limited use. I see some JS samples being spent constructing Activity Stream tabs for a long time, but without the native stack frames, it's hard for me to know why things might be taking so long.

If you're able to reproduce this on Nightly, I'd happily look at a profile from a Nightly build.

Unfortunately, like last time, this profile is not symbolicated, and so there's limited utility in it.

Justin, are you waiting for symbolication to complete before saving the profile? When you dump the profile, a tab should open, and eventually the profile should display, but symbolication occurs _after_ this. There's usually a status message at the top of the window referring to the symbolication status. Sharing the profile is usually disabled until symbolication completes. Are you able to wait until symbolication completes before posting?
