No on-screen keyboard for Google News search box, but the keyboard will appear temporarily if the phone is locked.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Disable all add-ons.
2) Visit Google News.
3) Touch the search icon.
4) Lock and unlock the screen.
5) Close and reopen the search box.
6) Close the tab, visit Google News again, click the search icon.

Expected:
3) Keyboard appears so I can enter the search string.
4) Keyboard still appears.
5) Keyboard appears.
6) Keyboard appears.

Actual:
3) No keyboard.
4) Keyboard appears.
5) Keyboard appears.
6) No keyboard.

Firefox 55.0.2 on Google Pixel XL running Android 7.1.2.

Works for me on a Samsung Galaxy S6 and Nexus 5x.

When no keyboard is shown, does tapping on the search field open the keyboard?

Tapping in the search field on Google News does open the keyboard. Before tapping in the search field there is a blinking cursor in the field so it appears the field has focus. I don't see any apparent change in the cursor when I click in the field.

On wikia.com there is a similar "on demand" search field. Clicking the search symbol on wikia.com makes the search field appear and brings up the keyboard. It appears that Google News does something different in the initial creation of the search box.

The Android Firefox has been replaced with a new version without this bug (and a few other changes).
