I tried to do some operations with my mail box when I was offline this triggered a bunch of 'Failed to contact server' notifications. The issue is they show up even after I closed thunderbird which was a little annoying.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open an account in thunderbird
2. Go offline
3. Try to delete some 6 or more messages
4. Close thunderbird

Actual results:
Notifications about failure to contact server show up even after closing thunderbird.

Expected results:
Notifications related to thunderbird should not be shown after it has been closed.

Environment details:
OS: ubuntu 16.04
Looks like the TB instance hasn't fully shut down. Another report of this on bug 1396243.

I don't think those seem related. They are more of hanging issues.

My bad :( It currently doesn't seem to be happening even if I'm not in safe mode. I misinterpreted a notification shown when thunderbird was running but didn't disappear after I closed it to be one that came up after I closed thunderbird. So, I'll close this as invalid for now.

Seems I was wrong again, sorry. Though I'm not able to reproduce this with Steps in the description, I am able to consistently reproduce it with following Steps (even in Safe mode),

Steps to reproduce:
1. Go offline
2. Open thunderbird
3. Go to a folder that hasn't been Downloaded for offline usage but has the list of emails in it
4. Try to open a few emails
5. Close thunderbird

Actual results:
Notifications about failure to contact server show up even after closing thunderbird. I got some 7 or 8 of them, so I'm pretty sure.

Expected results:
Notifications related to thunderbird should not be shown after it has been closed.

macOS 10.12.6, TB 52.5.0
When starting TB offline (Ethernet cable disconnected) the same notification "Failed to connect to server imap.xxxx.fr" is displayed on my screen.
The notification is repeated each time I select another folder or a message in a folder and disappears after about five seconds.
It won't persist when I quit Thunderbird.

I tried to confirm this, but I don't use IMAP at the moment. So bear with me, what imap settings do I need to prevent downloading mail? (nearly all my mails were downloaded even though I set it to 10 days only)

Is the 'offline' we talk about, real offline (no network) or 'offline mode' (bottom left corner of the UI)?

by the way - in offline mode I get just the following text in my mail window (no popups at all):
"
The body of this message has not been downloaded from the server for reading offline. To read this message, you must reconnect to the network, choose Offline from the File menu and then uncheck Work Offline. In the future, you can select which messages or folders to read offline. To do this, choose Offline from the file menu and then select Download/Sync Now. You can adjust the Disk Space preference to prevent the downloading of large messages.
