Either the headers and/or contents are corrupted, or another email is shown. Moving the faulty message to another folder and moving it back to the Inbox usually fixes the issue. This seems to happen often with attachments. The most recent instance of this I got was a 200K email containing an attachment.
Confirming with nightly build from 2002-7-14. I have received two emails each containing an attachment with about 9 mbyte. It was not possible to open the folder. Each time I select a message Moz crashes. After deleting the .msf file and trying to select a message in the folder, Mozilla crashes and the .msf was only half created.

is this a dupe of bug 180227 (has more activity than this one) ?
Possible. But I my case, this happens with IMAP, and does not seem to be related to a large number of emails, but to large emails.
Unable to reproduce with large emails ranging from 100K to 4MB both inline and attachment. Tested IMAP account with win Mozilla 1.7 beta.
