1410437 - when I manually restart my browser (or computer) all my tabs go away and I have no option to restore previous tabs

I would have expected my history and recent tabs to have a reference so I could find my work.  Unfortunately I have to start over with only pinned tabs.

You should have access to it by clicking 'History > Restore Previous Session', which also restores the lists previously closed windows and tabs.
Or do you mean that we should _always_ restore this list of windows and tabs?

there is no restore previous session, only a list of history and recently closed tabs/windows.  History is sort of pointless because it has so many pages in the same domain, I can rarely find my old tabs that have been up for a few days.

'Restore Previous Session' is shown in the App Menu (main menu/ hamburger panel, whatnot) and in the History menu in the application menu. (Hit Alt on Windows/ Linux, on OSX it's always there.)
Once you've continued your session, opened tabs, started browsing, the previous session can't be restored again - the feature will be and look disabled - unless you go to your profile folder and restore a sessionstore backup file to be sessionstore.jsonlz4. Then, when you restart, the 'Restore Previous Session' will be available to you again.

This UX is far from great. Thus, we're working on making it better - bug 1400942 is an example to make things better discoverable. But there's much more we can and should do. One of those is to restore the previous session under all circumstances.

Re last comment about restoring previous session on computer start-up....Amen! Frequently, when I restart my computer (Windows 10) each day, and click on the FF icon, I just get the BBC pop-out player window and nothing else...all my previous tabs have disappeared. Restoring tabs does not bring them back. There is no 'Restore previous session' option in the History drop down tab.
