With bug 1409839 more message themes were introduced. The preferences for these themes are only partly localizable: The Variant names cannot be localized at the moment (only the default variant name), see screenshot.

Florian, any idea how hard this would be? I think the message style names are in https://dxr.mozilla.org/comm-central/source/mail/locales/en-US/chrome/messenger/preferences/chat.dtd I can't seem to figure out where the variants are loaded though...

It's just the file names that is used as the variant name (after a s/_/ /g). If we wanted to localize variant names for the built-in themes only, we could just put variant file names as the key for localized strings in a .properties file.
