Currently the join/part messages in the Thunderbird theme are grey to not attract attention. Unfortunately with bug 1409901 the nicknames became colourful and visually break the flow of the discussion.

I personally enjoy this feature (plus it is also what offers you tooltips with information on the user when you hover it). Further, the grey usernames indicate that a user went offline or is away (not sure we still do that in TB).

Yes, this is working as expected.
It looks like bug 1409901 added a pref to disable this though (messenger.conversations.showNicks). Not sure if that still works. If it doesn't, that might be a bug.
