User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; rv:57.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/57.0
Build ID: 20171112125346

Steps to reproduce:

When a link in clicked it opens in same tab instead of new tab, as I have chosen in Options.

Actual results:

Link opens in current tab.

Expected results:

Link should have opened in new tab.

The option refers to when a page tries to window.open another page; it's not for all links. Or am I misinterpreting what you're saying?

If I click on a bookmark, for example, it opens in the tab I currently have active, instead of opening in a new tab. In Options, I have selected "Open new windows in a new tab instead" and "When you open a link in a new tab, switch to it immediately." It does neither of these. Am I mis-understanding something here. I just want link and bookmarks to open in a new tab, like it did in previous versions of Firefox.

I'm not sure about those options. I bet Panos knows or knows who to ask :)

Disregard all my bugs. Went back to FF 56.0B9.
I have a report that external links are also opening in the active tab (or the tab that most recently had focus, I guess) rather than in a new tab. Not sure if that is the same bug or if we should file a new one.
Andrei, can your team test this both with links from bookmarks and with links from external (desktop) applications? Did the behavior change, say, from opening links in Outlook so they used to appear in a new tab but now appear in the last active tab? Thanks!

Marco, is this expected for opening bookmarks in general?

FWIK bookmarks are opened by default inside the current tab. Same for links (exception for those that have target="_blank" or for external links).
If I am correct those selected options "Open new windows in a new tab instead" and "When you open a link in a new tab, switch to it immediately" are not meant to force the bookmarks or links to open in another tab.

Waiting for Marco to confirm if this is how it actually works (or not).

I tried to verify this behavior way back to Firefox 37.0a1 but it's the same behavior with what I described up above. Can you tell us on what build did you managed to reproduce your behavior?

I tried to reproduce the behavior using external links from different external (desktop) applications but they are successfully opened inside a new tab.

Mac OSX

When clicking a link in Slack, the link opened in the active tab and not a new tab.

When clicking multiple links in Evernote, all of the links opened in the active tab rather than new tabs.

When clicking multiple links in Outlook (from a newsletter, for instance) all of the links opened in the active tab rather than in new tabs.

Could you please check if there is any chance that you might have the browser.link.open_newwindow.override.external pref set to 1 ?

Also..can you reproduce this with a new profile? (having the "Open new windows in a new tab instead" and "When you open a link in a new tab, switch to it immediately" options set).

Bookmarks opening in tabs is controlled by separate options in about:config:
browser.tabs.loadBookmarksInTabs
browser.tabs.loadBookmarksInBackground

There is the old bug 469456 about unifying the background behavior (and the prefs). There is no bug I remember about unifying the loadInTabs prefs.

the UI pref explicitly says "the new WINDOWS", so it's not about "always open in a new tab. Though, it indeed is a bit confusing and maybe could be worth re-evaluating.

I wonder if you had browser.tabs.loadBookmarksInTabs set to true, and somehow that setting got lost (maybe due to a Firefox Refresh?)

This should probably be marked as a duplicate of bug 469456, or move to Preferences for this:

Moving to Bookmarks & History for now in case Marco has other plans.
