Nightly fails to apply update, continually prompts to apply an update

Steps to reproduce:

I opened Firefox Nightly, went to Help / About Nightly to check for an update. nightly-community . Nightly version 57.0a1 (2017-11-14) (64-bit)

Actual results:

An update was found, it downloaded and I was offered restarting Nightly to finish the update on a button, I clicked the button, Nightly did restart, after the restart I checked for an update again. There already was a button Restart to update Nightly, which I clicked again. It went on as an infinite loop: after the restart, I went to web page and, since when this happened to me the last time, Nightly would not notice the update correctly just when I re-checked for an update immediately after the restart without actually doing anything in an updated version. This time, however, this does not matter. 

Expected results:

Nightly should have checked for an update after its update restart and inform me it is up to date, or, if there have been several updates since I last updated Nightly, it should have downloaded and install the next new update. However, it still offers a restart to finish an update. Nightly either does not recognize it managed to update - the update goes unnoticed, unregistered, or the update did not work.

I’m also seeing this on Linux on the latest Nightly. When restarting the browser without opening the About dialog and pressing the button, or when restarting from the profile manager (--ProfileManager) without starting a profile, there’s sometimes no installation attempt. Installing manually from the .tar.gz works.

I’ll try to check if this has something to do with disk space the next time it shows up (had over 500 MB free, which is enough for two extracted copies of Nightly, but maybe the updater reserves some space on top of that).

I confirmed that this was because of low free space. Should I open a new bug anyway?

Thanks for the followup Ry! There is an old bug on file for running out of space while updating, bug 315278, so probably no need to file another one. I'd think 500MB would be enough, but I don't think we've tested to confirm how much is actually used in a long time.
