RESOLVED DUPLICATE of bug 1373244

Details

STR - download release - in release, download nightly - click to start nightly installer Actual - "nightly is already running" Expected: - nightly installs
That error doesn't show up until after the installation is finished and we're trying to run the copy that was just installed; it doesn't prevent doing the installation. Did the Nightly installation get created (that is, are there shortcuts, an entry in the default browser settings, the actual files in the right place, etc.)?

What should I to reset my (new) computer to the state where I can reproduce and tell you? :)
Flags: needinfo?(overholt) → needinfo?(mhowell)
Sorry, you've lost me a bit; I thought the STR were describing something you had just done, and I was asking about the current state of the machine after those steps. If you need to reset and try again, just running both uninstallers should be enough.

OT: I ran the uninstallers and moved my profiles (I wanted them) and got "Firefox has been installed before. Let's get you a new copy" which ran "Refresh Firefox" (about:profiles still shows the old ones I'd moved so I guess I didn't delete something). (In reply to Matt Howell [:mhowell] from comment #1) > Did the Nightly installation get created (that is, > are there shortcuts, an entry in the default browser settings, the actual > files in the right place, etc.)? Yes. I've clarified the summary. Sorry for the confusion :)

Summary: Can't install nightly while release is running → "Nightly is already running" error at end of Nightly installation process
Okay, thanks for clearing that up... but I'm afraid that means this isn't a bug. ;) We can't start the newly installed browser if there's any version already running because the new one would most likely be trying to use the same profile, and there's not a good way to deal with that problem in general except to put up the "we tried" message.

Thanks for clarifying, Matt. I'll return the favour with a clarified summary of what I'd prefer we did here (and you can in turn mark it as enhancement/P5 ;). I'm CCing Romain who's working on the whole profiles-per-channel situation so he's aware.

Summary: "Nightly is already running" error at end of Nightly installation process → Default to a new profile with Nightly installer
Well, yes, there's already been a lot of work going on in the larger separate-profile-for-each-channel project around bug 1373244. If that ends up having an installer component then we can open a bug here for that specific work, but I don't think it will because the feature needs to work on all platforms and we only have an installer on Windows.

bug 1373244 implementation assumes cloning the default profile on the first startup of any non release channel post implementation (currently 59 assumed) and run that cloned profile. So on the first startup my understanding is that other Firefox instances running the default profile would have to be closed so the default profile can be cloned. Once it's done the different channels should be able to run side by side. Dave knows all the details better than I do, I'm ccing him on the bug in case I got any of that wrong - my understanding is that there are no stub installer dependencies for bug 1373244.
