(Whiteboard: [mac:fullscreen:native-affected][mac:fullscreen:nonnative-affected])

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.13; rv:58.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/58.0
Build ID: 20171204150510

Steps to reproduce:

On Mac:
- start Firefox
- go to full screen (green button)
- quit (cmd+q)
- start Firefox

Actual results:

Firefox opened, filling the whole screen (not full screen, just using all the space).

Expected results:

Two possibilities:
1) Firefox should open with its last (non-full screen) size and position.
2) Alternatively, it could open in full screen, like for example iTunes.
I somehow favor 1, but the most important part is that the non-full screen settings are not lost for the next session after having gone to full screen.

Did this behave differently in the past? Would you mind running mozregression[1] to find out?

Flags: needinfo?(toni.schindler)
I have noticed that behavior at least a year or two ago. Maybe related to the "new" full screen mode introduced 2 or 3 OS X versions ago, where the whole program "zooms" into a new, virtual screen.

Note that "remembering non-fullscreen window size" and "remembering and opening in fullscreen" are not exactly the same.
While the former (this bug) is really a bug, the latter is more like a change in behavior, like the other reporter points out.
So I think those two bugs are not exactly duplicates.
Reopening as not duplicate. Maybe there could be a better bug title to distinguish it more clearly from the other one, but I have not come up with one yet.

Are you able to reproduce the loss of non-fullscreen size info after restart consistently? Can you try with current nightly? I have been unable to reproduce this particular aspect so far.
Flags: needinfo?(toni.schindler)
Still able to reproduce in both Firefox 57.0.1 as well as nightly (59) (just downloaded nightly for the first time to try this).
By the way, this also happens in Thunderbird.

Do you have multiple screens attached? In System Preferences > Mission Control, is the option "Displays have separate Spaces" checked or unchecked?
Flags: needinfo?(toni.schindler)
No additional screen.
Yes, "displays have separate spaces" is checked.
Flags: needinfo?(toni.schindler)
I was just able to reproduce this for the first time.

Confirmed with 59.0a1 Build ID 20171204234137 on macOS 10.13.

Set browser to re-open previously closed session on start-up; browser still takes up whole available screen-space instead of keeping the initial size.
On latest nightly 88.0a1 (2021-03-09):

  • with full-screen-api.macos-native-full-screen - false and true:
    Same as above.

Updating fields appropriately for the other main sections as well.
