Attached video output.mp4
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:56.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/56.0
Build ID: 20171003101214

Steps to reproduce:

- make a new profile with firefox -P and open it
- go to about:config
- change layers.acceleration.force-enabled from FALSE to TRUE
- restart firefox
- click firefox menu from toolbar
- interact with a webpage near the top right corner of visible window

Actual results:

- After clicking firefox menu from toolbar, button on toolbar appears pressed visually
- There is no dropdown menu appearing directly under the menu button
- Clicking in the top right area interacts with an invisible Firefox dropdown menu, and not the currently visible web page. For instance, clicking directly under the Firefox toolbar button opens Preferences in a new tab

Expected results:

- After clicking firefox menu in toolbar, the button on the toolbar should appear pressed visually
- A dropdown menu should appear directly under the button on the toolbar
- Clicking elements in the top right area of the browser should correspond to what area of the browser the mouse is visually actually in: If the mouse is interacting with toolbar dropdown menu elements, then the toolbar dropdown menu elements should be interacted with. If the mouse is visually over webpage elements and not the toolbar dropdown menu options, then clicking/interacting there should interact with the webpage and not toolbar options.
This also affects Firefox 56, Firefox 57 and Firefox 58 on Ubuntu 14.04 x64

Issue still affects Firefox on 59.0.1 on Ubuntu 14.04 x64 using Nvidia Geforce GTX 1070 on 381.22 proprietary drivers
My observation is very similar to what's shown in attached output.mp4 [0] BUT it happens by default (I don't have to fiddle anything in about:config)

My about:config filtered with "acceleration" is:
* layers.acceleration.disabled;false
* layers.acceleration.draw-fps;false
* layers.acceleration.force-enabled;false
* mousewheel.acceleration.factor;10
* mousewheel.acceleration.start;-1

I'm running this Ubuntu:
LSB Version:    core-9.20160110ubuntu5-amd64:core-9.20160110ubuntu5-noarch:security-9.20160110ubuntu5-amd64:security-9.20160110ubuntu5-noarch
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description:    Ubuntu 17.10
Release:        17.10
Codename:       artful

... with KDE Plasma. Btw, I don't recall having this issue when I was using Unity.

Also, if I disable compositor, then the issue goes away.

Hope it helps moving this issue forward.

[0]: A few examples:
* Hamburger icon changes as if it's clicked but not menu pops up
* Alt text tooltips don't show
* Notification popup which allow/disallow plugin execution or addon installation don't show on clicking corresponding icon

So, I ran update sudo apt full-upgrade and the issue went away. So, maybe, my switch from unity to plasma left something in bad state. Please ignore my inputs as user-error (I couldn't find a way to inline edit my comment)

Vikas, may I ask what Ubuntu you updated to that doesn't have this problem?

I noticed that when I didn't have nvidia drivers loaded, I can see the menus again on the same machine with same OS details

I haven't updated my ubuntu distribution while moving to plasma. lsb_release on my setup currently says:
LSB Version:    core-9.20160110ubuntu5-amd64:core-9.20160110ubuntu5-noarch:security-9.20160110ubuntu5-amd64:security-9.20160110ubuntu5-noarch
Distributor ID: Ubuntu

Release:        17.10
Codename:       artful

I don't remember which page/blob/*overflow I followed earlier. But, this time around I was going through https://linuxhint.com/install-kde-plasma-ubuntu/.

I can't say if my graphics driver upgraded in between BUT I had restarted the setup recently before doing apt full-upgrde after adding kde-backports ppa (as mentioned in link above) - and the menu issue got fixed as soon as I logged out and logged back in (I was switching to sddm as well and was checking my login screen).

Fwiw, I'm on Dell E7470, so nvidia isn't in play for me at least.
This issue seems to be resolved for me
- Firefox 64 (64-bit)
- Ubuntu 14.04 x64
- Nvidia Geforce GTX 1070
- 396.54 proprietary drivers
