Build ID: 20171217100047

Steps to reproduce:

- Enabled WebRender

1. Load Firefox Nightly using "normal" profile that works well when WebRender is disabled.

Actual results:

Firefox takes 8 minutes to load vs. 40 seconds or a minute. Process Explorer reports that a decent amount of CPU is being taken up by "MemCompression" and "System", though the vast majority is Firefox (pretty much the only other app running on my machine).

Took a memory report and Windows Performance Recorder report in the hopes that something my be helpful here.

Expected results:

Same or better performance using WebRender vs. when WebRender is off.

Update: I have a dual GPU machine, and starting with Nvidia instead of Intel via the context menu on right clicking on the Nightly shortcut pretty much obviates this issue. Firefox is still slow to start, but I have a large session, so that is somewhat expected.

The issue seems localized to when starting up with the Intel GPU.
Same issue here, Intel GPU too. Nightly starts almost instantly with Webrender disabled, takes ~15 sec with it enabled.
Are you still seeing this issue? If so, does the profile you're restoring have a lot of browser windows?
Flags: needinfo?(yoasif)
Kats, I am still seeing the issue, although it is definitely improved. The profile (and hardware underlying) has changed to some degree, but my profile opens 31 windows at launch.

With WebRender off, the launch to browse takes about a minute and a half, with 88% - 93% of my 8GB used (not by Firefox alone; Windows is counted in there as well, but Firefox is the only other running app besides the task manager). With WR enabled, windows and window content appear to be loaded after about 3 minutes, but the browser basically remains unusable (cannot open addon menus without considerable delay, for example) and my system reports 99% memory use. I killed the profile because it was taking too long to respond to this ticket.

This profile really ought not to exist on this machine in some sense, since I copied (and refreshed, and added add-ons, etc) on a machine with 12GB of RAM - this feels like a RAM issue to me, and the system seems like it is swapping or something.

Side note - Windows seems to suffer more from this type of issue; I'm not using a profile of this size in Linux, but my experience has been that the same profile will run far better on the same hardware under tab abuse in Linux vs. Windows.

Thanks, this is good to know. I think right now with WebRender we can definitely improve memory usage on the multi-window scenario and hopefully that will help your use case.
This one concerns me. It's not just about this use case -- it seems to be demonstrating several problems that could hurt us in Beta.
Priority: P2 → P1
The fact that the bad perf is only happening with Intel GPUs and not with NVIDIA GPUs may be caused by NVIDIA's shader compiler caching compilation and Intel's not? The work Dan and Mattwoodrow are doing mentioned in bug 1416650 comment #6 will probably help here.

The integrated Intel GPUs also share memory with the CPU, so all of our texture memory will be fighting for space with the rest of the browser.

31 windows is a pretty extreme example (I highly recommend using tabs instead!), but it seems like we're likely using more memory per window.

Once Bobby gets reporters landed we should be able to reproduce this fairly easy and see how much it can be minimized.

We've got some basic memory reporters in place. Can you take one from about:memory and post it here?

I will say that things are a lot better now than the initial report. That being said, here's the new memory report.

Thanks! It looks like you still have a fair amount of heap-unclassified in the GPU process. In general, WebRender should only be using memory for the foreground tab, but since you have a lot of windows open, you have a lot of foreground tabs.

Would you be willing to experiment a bit with closing different windows and remeasuring memory, in order to figure out which sites are triggering the most heap-unclassified? I can then do some analysis on that site and see what measurements we're missing.

Sure - just let me know what to do.

> Sure - just let me know what to do.

Start with your session as normal (with 31 windows), and confirm that you see ~145 megabytes of heap-unclassified in the GPU process, as seen in the recent memory report you attached. Then, iteratively close windows, and see what impact they have on heap-unclassified. Alternatively, you can start from one window and work upwards.

The desired information here is which URLs contribute most to heap-unclassified. I can then take those URLs, analyze them, and add reporters for the missing bits.

Thanks!

It does, thanks! I reproduced the issue, and am now tracking down those unclassified allocations. I'll add reporters for them in bug 1492263, and then we can re-evaluate where things stand here.
Priority: P1 → P2
I've landed some new reporters. Can you take another report? In general, does the speed and memory usage seem satisfactory at this point with your use-case, or is there still work to do?
Flags: needinfo?(yoasif)
Tentatively resolving until we hear back from the reporter. Feel free to reopen if there are still issues!
