Details
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:57.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/57.0
Build ID: 20171206182557
Steps to reproduce:
tried to log in to a Joomla website admin
Actual results:
- no dropdown of usernames that MIGHT apply; entering real username did not recall the saved password. I do not have a very recent save file of pwds; my old Password Manager add-on (?) does not seem to be available now?
Expected results:
the Password should have been filled in, obscured as dots, and login should have been possible

Hello,
Are you saying that the logins were saved by a Firefox add-on which is no longer available? Do you have saved logins visible in preferences?

yes, I have used for some long time (2-3 years?) Password Exporter curr 1.3.4 by Justin Scott (fligtar), looked on a linux laptop which has it on 54.0 (64-bit) for Linux Mint 1.0 - FF warns me now (first time switch on for several days) that there is a critical update, so done an Export - 1529 exported to xml, and to csv - I had not noticed the option before, but pwds on this laptop not updated since 8 Nov 2017.
In Preferences now I see only three entries, for this week, two of them for bugzilla!
I will search on web for the "old" add-on, but I have created new websites recently so will have some problems finding/ changing pwds for those. I have found at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/password-exporter/ the notice that it is NOT compatible with my current version of Firefox, but not waht to do about it and its saved passwords!!
Isi it safe (for my uptodate, this week before the (auto?) update to 57.0.2 passwords) to try installing any one of the current add-ons for Password Management - eg Bitwarden ?
I do not know where my existing saves passwords are stored, so that I could back them up?
Thanks
Trevor

Hopefully you were able to import your logins somewhere else. You can import back to Firefox from IE/Edge/Chrome on Windows. I don't think there is much left to do here at this point as the password loss wasn't a widespread problem.
