Until we get bug 566510, we're not going to be able to do this bug. Given how drag & drop works currently, I would also suspect that allowing multi-select tabs would also fix this automatically. I'd also expect it to be wrapped into the scope of that bug - especially as it is mentioned in comment 0.

Therefore, I'm going with marking this as duplicate for now. We're unlikely to try to implement this without that bug being fixed, and there's a very high likelihood that fixing that bug will also fix this one.
