Build ID: 20171206182557
Steps to reproduce:
normal research, any word.
Actual results:
redirected to "about:preferences#search"
It only happens once or twice a month and if I search again immediately after it works, the problem disappears.
If i can't change that I at least need to know why.
Expected results:
Search results on my default search engine: Qwant.
What I suspect is that it's Firefox that makes a suggestion to change the settings.
Because i change settings :
from (default): "Use the address bar to navigate and search"
To: "Add search bar to toolbar"
interesting theory!
Now I have a doubt, I would say that I'm about 80% sure I haven't touched the up key.
I'll keep an eye on it and if anyone has another idea...
Thanks!

Yes, most likely you've pressed the Up key without realizing it, which selects the settings button. Please do keep this bug updated if you see it again.

We also have bug 1416041, did you disable all the search engines in the one-off buttons area by chance?
Btw, that bug also requires pressing UP (it's slightly worse because there you can't see the selection)
I'm marking this as WFM because we are assuming UP was pressed and thus there's nothing for us to track short term, but you can feel free to reopen the bug if you should be able to reproduce without that keypress.

Ok! it's probably the cause, I kept that in mind but I haven't had another incident since.
Thank you!
