Been using them for years thru many version upgrades. Actual results: They don't work automatically now. They only work manually. Expected results: They should work on incoming mail. They always did. Not sure when they stopped.

I narrowed down the problem thru trial and error. The filters work correctly if I first receive the email with my Thunderbird client on my laptop or desktop. If I receive the email first on my phone (using K9 email app), then the filtering doesn't occur when I later open Thunderbird.

We had a few reports on filters not working automatically in TB 52. In TB 52 we actually made a change that mail read on mobile devices would still be filtered in TB, bug 1320832 and bug 308148. So that's the opposite of what you're describing. Do you see any change when you set the preference mail.imap.filter_on_new to false? Tools > Options, Advanced, General, Config Editor.
I'm using vs 52.5.2 (32-bit) I changed that setting to false. Same thing - if I read the email on my phone first, the laptop/desktop doesn't filter it.

I've found a workaround, but not a solution. My phone email app (K9) has a setting which allows read messages not to be marked as read (they remain marked as unread after they're opened with K9). By setting that, whenever I open Thunderbird, it sees the messages as unread and filters them properly.
What is an example filter criteria that is failing?
