143139 - task bar popup announces an incorrect, random number of new messages

most recent example (against an imap server) the mailer announces "you have 8
new messages". when i check my mail, there are only 2 new messages. i am
filtering my mail to discard spam so i count the messages that get punted into
the trash folder. 

this is fairly normal. it announces "2 new messages", there are none. it
announces "12 new messages", there are 4 or 5.

where does mozilla get its number of new messages from?

Hmm I think this is probably dupe of bug 138631..

Since you have filters on, the alert will show total sum
of new mesgs that just arrived plus any new mesgs still in
the last filtered folder that got new mail or total new mesgs stil
sitting in all filtered folders..
