The corrolary to bug 142179, which describes this behavior for cookie management. Sorting by .com first, then cnn.com, then server1.cnn.com etc is a much more intuitive and useful way to sort lists of hostnames and makes it much easier for the user to manage their privacy.
Oops, copied title from 142179 and forgot to change.

Patch from bug 142179 also fixes this case.
John V, Does your patch also address the Password Manager?
No the patch does NOT address the password manager. It looks like it would be easy to do though. It appears that the password manager is in extensions/wallet/signonviewer/ Just modify SignonViewer.js and SignonViewer.xul in the same fashion and it should work from my quick glance at the code. Add a bug and tell me about it and I'll make a patch. The patch will depend on the other patch being applied since I need the ReverseHost function I created in the other patch.
I filed bug 143472 on the Password Manager part of this
