As it is we usually get error.engine.reason.record_{upload,download}_fail, which is not particularly helpful. Instead, they should be reported as httperrors.

We lose the ability to know if it was during upload or download here, but maybe this doesn't matter? If it does, we could find a way to include the method in the error info in telemetry.
