Details
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:58.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/58.0
Build ID: 20180128191252
Steps to reproduce:
-Open Firefox
- Try to play any video, such as this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sGIm0-dQd8M or this http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6dui46
- Video will load on buffer but won't start playing.
Present bug's situation and some contextual specs about my SO and machine:
- Updated to previous FF's version (the present one is 58.0.1 (64-bits), previous one installed last tuesday 23/01/2017), problem initially only in youtube website
- Updated to 58.0.1 (64-bits), problem got general, affecting all video websites
- Problem affects only Firefox, not other browsers (checked on IE, Tor Browser, Palemoon)
- With Firefox on "safe mode", however, problem does not happen
- With FF striped from any extension/plugins but normal mode, problem still happens
- With FF in private/safe browsing mode, problem also happens
- OS: Windows 10 Version 1607 x64 with all latests security patches, PC Toshiba Satellite R830
- Security software running: Window's Defender and built-in Firewall
- Tried de-activating all Firefox extensions, no result
- Tried installing a Firefox extension to help play Flash videos on Firefox, no result
- Tried uninstalling Adobe Flash, no result
- Tried reinstalling latest Flash version, no result
- Checked Windows firewall configuration, Firefox was allowed internet connections
- Tried uninstalling Firefox, cleaning up all left registry keys, folders and other FF remains, and then doing a clean FF install with new user profile, no result
Actual results:
Tried to play any video in www.youtube.com, www.youpak.com, www.dailymotion.com, etc. with Firefox. Video will load in buffer (with progress bar going very slowly), but playback won't ever begin. Eventually, some warning message may appear on video screen, suggesting to close browser window and retry (which if tried, of course, won't give any better result). With previous FF update, problem affected only youtube videos; now with FF 58.0.1, the bug is affecting all websites with Flash/HTML5 video content.
Expected results:
Videos should be playing smoothly in Youtube and any other internet video sites, both with Flash or HTML5 plugins, as they used to in my machine with Firefox until last week's FF update (pretty sure that update was causing or related to the problem, as I started to experience it immediately afterwards, while I had never encountered it previously). I do hope we can find a solution for this, as I've found Bugzilla posts for similar bugs that are dated from as way bak as 7-10 years ago, and which were left in unsolved status after serveral Bugzilla participant's exchanges; otherwise I'll have to drop Firefox (already considering some alternative)

Latest changes in state of affairs:
I uninstalled "Flashblock" complement (which I used to have installed and used for switching Flash on and off discretionally on certain sites, and had never created any problem until the posted issue appeared 2 weeks ago), but left another of my installed comlements, "HTML5 Everywhere", and set the latter to allow Flash in Youtube (it has a specific config option for doing that).
I found out this setting has the effect of provoking some youtube videos to be reproduced in Flash, whth the result that "some" of these do "sometimes" play (but not always; and haven't been able to figure out any rationale for this "sometimes yes, sometimes not" arbitrary behaviour). If said complement is set to block Flash and enforce HTML5 in Youtube, however, no video will ever start playing: they will be eternally buffering but playing will never start, as I described above. The mentioned "HTML5 Everywhere" complement has also options for applying similar setting in other video sites, but that option won't work on them(in Dailymotion, i.e., the result will be that, instead of Flash playing the video in the place of HTML5, - as was sometimes the case in Youtube - a blank page displaying just an plaintext error message "Oops... couldn't retrieve the required file" will appear).
I gave again a try to a "Refresh Firefox" with no complements and a freshly created user account, with no result at all. As indicated on my original post, only in "Safe mode" will FF be able to play again all videos with no problem, whereas uninstalling manually all add-ons and pluggins, or performing a new, fresh reinstall of FF, won't solve the issue.
¡Comm'on, you guys! 6 days already since I posted and no single suggestion yet from no one. ¿Should one believe nobody has any idea about how to deal with this bug?
I'm allowing a week more of waiting, but if by then the issue hasn't disappeared or no-one here in Bugzilla reacts, then, with my heart aching, I'm gonna have to say "goodbie, Firefox", and change my browser for good.

To make the extent of the bug (perhaps) clearer: In this (my only) PC, I have three different user accounts set up: one with administrator rights; another one for limited user #1 (the one I habitually use and the most thoroughly configured of them) and aa third one, user #2, also with limited user's rights, intended for an eventual guest and with just the most basic configuration.
The fact is, since the signs of the bug first showed in m PC after Firefox's update two weeks ago, they affected Firefox in ALL THREE user accounts, and in quite the same way (the one described on my first post above). I've checked it. That should prove, fi anything, at least one thing: that the bug must have nothing to do with my own user's configuration and addons, since on each user account the Firefox setup is quite different, and in the case of the second limited user account, it is practically bare bones, no extensions or tweaks applied. But the synpthoms are the same on all three.
After so many time waiting, and having received no support or feedback whatsoever so far, I decided to risk and try a few tweaks on about:config on my main limited user account, based on practially no previous knowledge or experience at all on my part, and with the only guidance of some technical documents I could find in the web. Basically I looked for the parameters on the "media." part of about:confing which were marked as "modified" and tried turning some of them back to their "default" value - I changed only those whose value is binary, enable/disable. Result: at first things seemed to become a bit better (some codec that Youtube's check page previously detected as "missing" in FF were now checked as enabled, and some videos did seem to play); but immediately they changed to worse: Youtube now shows just an entirely blank page on FF (not even a black video window appears, just Youtube's logo and some unresponsive website's command buttons).
Now that FF has been reduced to a piece of useless software (for me), and finding no help, I had begun to plan to migrate to Palemoon. And I would have migrated already, if it wasn't for Zotero, which is pretty essential to me and which don't plan to put out a suitable connector addon for Palemoon. As I do not want to install Chrome and don't like Edge, this is right now the only thing keeping me attached to FF - and it has me pretty caught. I do need to work out a solution for this, and I please do need some help!
Is there anybody out there?

How frustrating! Sorry you're having trouble. I'm interested that you say the problem didn't occur when you started Firefox in 'safe mode' but did when you disabled extensions. That suggests the issue is something with your profile.
Can you please paste the 'Extensions' and 'Important Modified Preferences' sections from the about:support page on your browser? Maybe there's something indicative there.

Hi, Ralph, thanks for being so helpful - and I do need help with this...
Here you have the sections of the support info page you ask for. They correspond to the browser's user profile on the main limited user account of my laptop PC (the user account I use the most; there are other two user accounts, each with their own FF user profile in the corresponding AppData subfolder). But the thing is, as I explained on my previous post, that FF is affected by this issue in all three user accounts of my PC; and on each user account, FF's settings are pretty different. Also, in all three of them, disabling or uninstalling all extensions won't solve the issue; restarting FF with a new, fresh user profile won't do either; not even completely uninstalling FF from the machine with deletion of all and every leftover and reinstalling FF again from afresh will do any better - I have tried all three estrategies already. Only when restarting on safe mode seem the browser to be unaffected, I've checked it in all three user accounts and it's so.
So this bug is really weird; ¿how can it be related to all three user profiles, being so differently configured, and located in different folders for different user accounts?
Previous to the FF update that seemed to be connected with the issue, I remember having installed a Windows 10 security patch on my laptop (a day or two before I applied FF's update), but it didn't seem to cause any trouble, as far as I could notice back then. ¿Might 3rd party software have made any changes on FF? I do not remember to have installed any when the issue started, though. Nor did I install (or uninstall) any further FF addon at that point...
Also, please have in mind that, in my attempt to try to solve the issue by myself, because time was passing by and I had to do something, I've already messed around with some settings and probably just screwed things further - as it was likely to happen - so the present settings may not reflect accurately the exact settings of my browser at the time the issue originally showed up two weeks ago):

15 days have gone since I posted the issue; more than a week since I posted the above info on my browser's settings - no further response, and I'm still experiencing the bug.
I have stopped trying to find solutions by myself - I don't have the required knowledge (I may only make things worse). Maybe I don't have the technical vocabulary to describe the bug with the required accuracy, either.
Am I the only user affected by this issue?
Is there anyone that may help with this, please?
Thanks.

Hi, Ralph.
Are you still there? I tried to reply to your info request several days ago- my reponse is above on the thread; maybe I did it the wrong way and you got no notification and didn't see my post with the info. Here is the info you requested, again:

Hi David, thanks for your patience. Unfortunately I don't see anything the preferences list which which suggests the origin of your problem.
When you say it works in 'safe mode' is that starting Firefox in its own safe mode, or running Firefox normally when _Windows_ itself is in safe mode? Firefox safemode is described at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode?redirectlocale=en-US&redirectslug=Safe+Mode#w_how-to-start-firefox-in-safe-mode
My only other suggestion is to try re-installing Firefox. That's a bit drastic since you'll lose your setup; you could perhaps try making a fresh user account and trying Firefox there? That would at least tell us if it's something common to your three accounts that's the issue, or something about the system itself.

Hi Ralph,
Now, it's too bad it can't be solved by retweaking FF's about:config preferences... this is a really weird bug, indeed.
When I wrote about 'safe mode', I meant restarting FF in FF's (the program's) own safe mode, not in Windows (the OS's) safe mode.
On the other hand, as I explained earlier in the thread, I have already tried the option you suggest - that is, I already tried uninstalling FF completely (using an uninstaller to do an extra scan for leftovers, then running CCleaner and a registry cleaner just in case, then reinstalling FF's last version. And it didn't solve the issue at all.
What I haven't done, and I'll try, is creating a new user account, and see how FF works in that one. I'll post again reporting the results.
On the other hand, I can get some videos to play via the video preview in startpage's search engine, as long as I keep HTML5 blocked with an extra FF extension, and as long as I keep another separate extension (called "HTML5 Everywhere") configured so as *not* to block Flash - these two extensions are apparently having the combined effect of forcing Flash, whenever it's available, to play the videos. And they sometimes do succeed, but not always; so HTML5 seems to be the most severely affected by the bug (although Flash is affected, too: I cannot get any videos at all played in Youtube's own website, neither with HTML5 nor with Flash, and the same goes for Vimeo and other similar sites). While, on the other hand, if I uninstall these two extensions from FF, no videos will play on FF at all. (Previously, i. e., before the bug appeared, I used to have HTML5 everywhere set up exactly for the opposite purpose - i.e., in order to block Flash and let always HTML5 do the video rendering, and it used to work fine).
But the prospects with this bug are rather dark, at least that's my impression.

Ralph, sorry for the belated reply. I'be been having an altogether different issue with the latest two security patches for windows 10 (they have both refused to correctly install on my machine - not the first time I experience this sort of issue; but this time the two patches and their install problem come within an intervall of scarcely a week), so I have been busy and using all my efforts in trying to sort out the first, and now the second update issue (not completely done with it yet). But I hope I'll be able to solve this relatively fast.
As soon as I have this solved, I'll turn back to my FF's problem; I'll and try to experiment with your suggested procedure and then post you back the results here.
Thanks,
D.

> No worries. Thanks for keeping the bug up to date.
Hi, Ralph,
Finally (after solving my issue with Windows update agent and applying the latest security patches to my OS), I could try the experiment you suggested - I created a new limited user account and runned Firefox with an all-fresh user profile, and then I observed how it worked.
The result: FF in the new user account it is also affected by the bug. No HTML videos can be played in You-tube or in most other video websites; buffer preload starts but never completes and the video never starts playing (sometimes an error message will appear after a while: "Is the video taking a longer time to play than usual...?" or something similar, clicking on it will take me to YouTube's webpage for checking which video formats are enabled in the browser, but that won't help solving anything, as they all appear checked as enabled. Flash player only works when enforced via some addon or tweak to prevent HTML5 from getting started; but then this only works sometimes, and others it doesn't.
Therefore, as I had suspected, the issue affects the whole OS, in all user accounts in my machine; but it only affects Firefox - other browsers I have installed (Microsoft IE, Palemoon both in X86 and X64 versions; even Tor Browser) seem to have no problem in playing videos, in all websites and formats.
Now, what could I do to try to diagnose & solve this? This is a most irritating issue, and it really affects the functionality of FF dramatically for me. Any ideas?
Thanks,
DAVID

Firefox 58.0.2 (64-bit, Windows)
I saw the same Problem on a Toshiba Notebook on Windows-10-1709.
HTML-5-Videos had worked before some Updates of Firefox and Windows have been installed. (Sorry, i cannot provide more Details.)
I tried the same Things as daviddesoto including:
> Deinstallation of Firefox
> New virgin Admin-User
> Installation of Firefox without Changes to the Config and no Add-Ons
(except the preinstalled Plugins: Adobe-Flash-Player, OpenH264-Videocodec, Widevine Content Decryption Module).
=> FF-Normal Mode: Flash-Videos work, HTML-5-Videos don't:
They will load on Buffer (you can view the Preview on the timeline), but they won't start playing, even if you click on Start.
=> FF-Safe Mode: Flash-Videos do not even show up, HTML-5-Videos work normal.

Last update on the bug:
As of yesterday, 08/03/2018, the bug as I first described has suddenly disappeared. HTML5 does play again in Mozilla on my PC. The very previous day 08/03/2018, late in the evening, I was still clearly experiencing the bug - in fact, I was quite upset because I needed to visualize a particular clip that only seemed to be available on Youtube, but Youtube wouldn't let play in any other format than HTML5, till finally I found it on Youpak and this website let me play it as Flash.
No apparent explanation for this change, as I did not apply any Windows update patches, modified no about:config parameters in Firefox, nor, to my knowledge, was any update to FF extensions or to FF itself that was applied during the time between my last post (when I reported the results of performing the experiment suggested by Ralph) and yesterday, when the bug disappeared. I did update some drivers last weekend, but that was clearly before I tried Ralph's procedure.
Unless some system settings were changed or some update patch applied to my system without my knowing it, the only explanation coming to my mind is that Youtube itself changed it's website settings. It may be that some of Youtube's previous settings were affecting or blacklisting FF in some builds.
I still do have a different bug now, which is that, when I play a video, shortly after starting it, a duplicate sound track of the same video will start playing - so I'll hear it duplicate and with some ms's delay, and the duplicate track is out of my control, I can't interact with it at all, and the only way to stop it is to reload that video's tab serveral times or to close the tab altogether. This happens on about 50% of the videos I play now (I've tried it a couple of times on different Youtube videos; I havn't seen this bug on Vimeo or other websites).
I hope this helps to figure out what is going on here.

Well, thanks for all the testing. That's certainly equally confusing. I'm no more enlightened than before, but glad to hear it's working a little better. The new problem sounds almost as frustrating!
Since I'm out of ideas how to make progress, I'm unassigning the bug. Anyone is welcome to take it over for further investigation.

I am sorry to report that the bug is back. Unable to reproduce most video contents in most video websites with FF.
In connection to this: I just installed a series of Windows 10 security patches; after having installed the last one of them, I start FF, try to play a video, and experience the bug on it and on most other videos I try to play.
FF notified me immediately thereafter that there was a FF update and I applied it (now I have version 59.0), hoping it would solve the issue - but it did not.
Unfortunately, the last Windows 10 update I applied before the buf reappeared was installed through a .cab archive, and there's no way to uninstall it in order to see if things get better; at least not that I can see. Even more unfotunate is that System Restore is not working anymore. I have several recent restore points, but after an hour waiting for the program to do its job and restarting the machine, an error message will appear telling the restore point could not be applied. And frankly speaking, I have no time nor energy left to go through the complex instructions I have read in some forums in order to try to repair it .
One thing I am almost sure about: this FF bug must have something to do with some MS Windows 10 update. Most probably with updates that are marked as "critical" and whose real content is that they install in the user's machine a program trying to enforce Windows 10 latest "Creators" feature update. Sounds like conspiracy theory, but I have realized I only got my last impression of having get rid of FF's video play bug after I had succesfully got rid of MS's program which enforces the feature updates.
Please, please, seriously, cant anyone give some help with this? I'm on the border of throwing my PC throgh the window and letting it crash really **** the ground.

(In reply to Piraten-Kris Pseudonym from comment #17)

Kris, I have seen this bug reported by a good many users in other forums (outside Bugzilla) which I have been reading since I first experienced it, sometimes labelling what I take to be this same bug as "Youtube White Screen of Death", or alternatively, "HTML5 Black Screen of Death") .
Windows 10 update & temeletry services' high bandwidth consumption may have something to do with it, as the bug seems to disappear temporarily (in my machine) after I manage to keep both them turned out for a while; or it may be some defect Mozilla FF update - but again, the cause may be something entirely different from those two hypotheses. I followed a long thread of posts in one forum where several technically knowledgeable users had been trying to diagnose this bug by making intensive tracking and analysis of data output from FF's console, but they came to no positive result at all.
Apart from that, there does not seem to be any rationale for explaining and diagnosing the bug - at least not one that I can figure out. Right now and since a couple of days ago, it is not affecting Firefox on my PC (for the moment), but I'm getting used to the idea it may reappear tomorrow when I start it, or the day after tomorrow, as it comes and goes with no apparent reason...
Are you still seeing the initial bug? If so, does running Firefox in safe mode still resolve the issue?
Clearing ni from :rillian, as I'm afraid he's no longer working on media issues.

I tested again on the affected machine (Toshiba Notebook) with Firefox 59.0.2 (64-bit, Windows-10-1709-64-bit):
=> Still the same Bug as described in my Comment 13
=> Still resolving when running Firefox in safe mode
(Just deactivating all Add-Ons or blank new User-Profile does not help)
I did _not_ experience this bug on a different machine under Linux(64-bit/64-bit))
So far, i could _not_ reproduce the Bug on another different Machine (Firefox 59.0.2 and later 60.0 (32-bit, Windows-10-1709-32-bit), newly installed with the same about:config-Settings, f.i. media.autoplay.enabled;false, and the same Add-Ons as the affected machine.
If you're not seeing the issue in safe mode could you try disabling hardware acceleration (as detailed here https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-extensions-themes-to-fix-problems) and let me know if that impacts the issue?
David, can you let me know if you're still having any issues?

Dear Bruce,
Please excuse me for my belated reponse. The video playing bug with Firefox is annoying; but recently I've been facing much more serious issues (unrelated to this FF bug, though closely related with MS's flood of buggy so-called "security" patches for Windows last month), such as general corruption of Windows 10 system files (preventing me to get the diagnose service running or from using system restore, among other nice things), and a total unability to repair them with normal methods like DISM in any simple way. So please, again, excuse me if I can't pay your info request the attention I should, as I'm fighting **** another front right now, and pretty exhausted.
I did try your strategy (disabling software acceleration), and for the moment being, it seems to work - it works on both the administrator and the user account I have currently set up on my PC.
This, however, may not mean anything definitive, as I had been suggested that solution before and it didn't work at all when I first tried it. As I also explained back them (please see some of my earlier posts), the problem does disappear indeed when restarting FF into safe mode - but it does not seem to be related to any plug-in or comlement a user could manually disable from FF's "options" or "complements" panels - I've checked that before thoroughly and disabling complements won't solve the issue.
I hope this is of some help in trying to diagnose, figure out and solve this annoying bug,
D.
