VERIFIED DUPLICATE of bug 1373244

People

(Reporter: costinel, Unassigned)

Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:60.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/60.0
Build ID: 20180217220052

Steps to reproduce:

Attempt to launch Nightly (to report issues that occur on Nightly) while having release version already running.

Actual results:

It opens a new release version window

Expected results:

Open Nightly as a totally separate program that has no clue about the release version so it won't step on each others feet.

Look at how Google does with their "Nightly" called Canary: it opens as a separate program with it's own profile path, totally different than their release version and one has no idea about the existance of the other, freely being able to use them at the same time.

No, I won't waste time to close 1000 tabs, open nightly, report the issue, close nightly, reopen 1000 tabs, all for a single issue. what if I want to report 100 issues?
Launch the second version with the following command line parameters
-no-remote -p ProfileNameGoesHere

-no-remote -p ProfileNameGoesHere
^ this is not what I expected. this is a workaround, which requires further additional work *BEFORE* running that command (manually creating a profile and having to uncheck the checkbox that says "use the selected profile without asking on startup") which I don't like.

My request is: do this automatically without me having to perform any trick like above.

Please reopen and not make this a duplicate.
This is a different request than the issue you've duped this against.
I repeat what is this about:
NIGHTLY SHOULD BE ABLE TO RUN ITSELF IN PARALLEL WITH RELEASE WITHOUT ANY TRICKS MADE BY USER.

What you did was to suggest a WORKAROUND.
I'm not asking for WORKAROUNDS.
I'm asking for a DEFAULT behaviour of Nightly.

Bug 1373244 is tracking the ongoing work to make it so that release and nightly have different user profiles, which will make it possible (and likely the default behavior) to run them in parallel. This is exactly what you are asking.

A workaround is the best we can offer until bug 1373244 is fixed.
