Looking at it with little knowledge, I believe this is intentional. Since you are clearing the url bar, you are likely going to be entering something anew. Hence it makes sense to erase these items that relate to the url loaded - since you're not actually looking at that loaded url any more.

You can press escape to go back to the currently loaded URL and get the star & other items back.

Buttons disappear even when awesome bar is not selected.

I don't think that matters - again you've cleared the bar, and so there's no url in there now. You're preparing the tab for something else. The UI is remaining consistent with itself.
