I googled, opened up several search results in new tabbed windows, and shortly
thereafter noticed my status bar had turned into an advertisement.

I didn't google for judy dickey, but I did click middle on her link when it
showed up in google.  She's been selling real estate for fifteen years and has
learned the most about obnoxious hard sells.

I would propose that javascript changes to things like status bars only take
place (if at all) to the status bar when the particular tabbed window is being
viewed.
